Good morning, friends. ☕❤️

Well, yesterday got a little busy and got away from me, and somewhere in the middle of everything, I forgot to post. I don’t want to get into the habit of that because I’ve worked hard to make showing up here every day part of my routine. I’ve done really well with it, so I’m going to give myself some grace, get back on track, and keep moving forward. After all, missing one day doesn’t mean I have to quit.

Yesterday was mostly work, but I took a little break at lunch and ran out to one of our local orchards to pick up some peaches and tomatoes. I’m planning to do some more canning, including peaches, maybe some peach jam, canned tomatoes, and pasta sauce. One of the things I’m really trying to work on right now is knowing what’s actually in the food I’m eating. There is so much added to the things we buy these days that sometimes I think it’s worth going back to the basics and knowing exactly what I’m putting into my food.

The farmers market is starting to wind down for the season, too. Every week there seem to be fewer people and fewer vendors, but I still picked up my onions, little tomatoes, milk, and the other things I usually get. There’s something I really enjoy about getting food from people in our own community and knowing where some of it comes from.

Today is going to be a little different because Matt and Garrett are out helping friends finish up some work on their house, so it’s just me. I’ve got a list a mile long, or at least it feels that way, but I’m also looking forward to having some time to myself. I’m going to clean the house, work on my canning, and just enjoy being home. We have church tonight, too, and I’m really looking forward to having some time to settle my mind and my heart.

Yesterday I also got the results back from my blood work, and there was some good news. I’m not diabetic, and I’m not even in the prediabetic range. My A1C was 5.4, which is actually 0.4 lower than it was back in February, so I’m thankful for that. My insulin level, however, was extremely high, and that helped answer some questions I’ve been having about the food noise, cravings, and constant thoughts about food that I’ve been experiencing. We’ve talked about insulin resistance before, and I’m beginning to understand more about how it affects me. My cholesterol is also high, so there are some things I’m going to need to work on.

I’m not looking at this as another diet. I’ve spent enough of my life going on diets, restricting foods, and then feeling like I completely failed when I ate something I wasn’t “supposed” to eat. I’m trying to change the way I think about food. I want to understand what makes me feel good, what doesn’t, and what choices are going to help me take better care of myself. I’m learning that one meal doesn’t undo everything, just like one missed blog post doesn’t mean I’ve failed at showing up.

I think there’s a bigger lesson in that for me.

Recently at church, we were talking about some of the same things we’ve been talking about here lately, and I kept thinking about how easily the world fills up our lives. We have work, family, responsibilities, phones, social media, television, errands, hobbies, worries, and a thousand other things competing for our attention. Before we realize it, our days are full.

But how much room are we actually leaving for God?

I’ve been thinking about that question because, if I’m being honest, I know I’m not giving God what I should. I know I need to spend more time in His Word. I know I need to spend more time talking to Him. I know I need to put the phone down and stop letting the world constantly fill my mind. And yet, I don’t always do it.

Instead of taking time to talk to God, I can find myself scrolling through my phone. Instead of opening my Bible, I might turn on the television. Then I wonder why my mind feels so busy and why I don’t feel as connected as I should.

It reminds me of the food noise I’ve been dealing with. When my mind is constantly consumed with food, there’s not much room for anything else. I think the same thing can happen spiritually. When we allow the world to fill every available space, we don’t leave much room for God to speak to our hearts.

At church we’ve talked about hanging the world on the hook and leaving it outside when we come into the building. But I think I need to learn how to do that at home, too. Not just on Sunday. Every day.

I also need to remember that giving myself grace doesn’t mean giving myself permission to stay exactly where I am. Grace means I can be honest about where I am without beating myself up, and then I can choose to do something different.

  • I can start again.

  • I can put the phone down.

  • I can open my Bible.

  • I can make room for God.

Romans 11:36 says:

“For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”

When I really stop and think about that verse, it puts so much into perspective. My health belongs to Him. My family belongs to Him. My job belongs to Him. My business belongs to Him. The things I’m worried about belong to Him. Even the things I don’t understand yet belong to Him.

I spend so much time trying to manage everything, fix everything, plan everything, and understand everything. Maybe part of my work right now is learning that I don’t have to carry all of it myself.

So today, before I fill my Saturday with cleaning, canning, errands, and everything else on my list, I’m going to make myself a cup of coffee and spend some time getting my mind in the right place.

Because I’ve been paying a lot of attention lately to what I’m putting into my body. Maybe I need to pay just as much attention to what I’m putting into my heart.

And that leaves me with a question I need to ask myself, too: If your life is a cup that’s 100% full, what percentage of that cup are you giving to God?

There’s no perfect answer, and I’m certainly not sitting here pretending that I’ve got mine figured out. I’m just trying to be honest about where I am and make room for God to have more of me than He has had lately.

Maybe that’s something you’re thinking about, too.

Until tomorrow…

Keep your coffee warm, your Bible close, and your eyes open for the blessings God places in your path today.

I’ll meet you back here tomorrow—with another cup of coffee and another conversation.

❤️ Mandy
