☕ Sunday Reflections: Embracing Ordinary Moments with Faith

Good morning, friend.

Sunday mornings have always felt different to me. The house is a little quieter, the coffee seems to taste a little better, and there’s something about gathering with our church family that naturally causes me to slow down. Before we leave, I like to sit at the kitchen table for a few moments and reflect on the week behind me. This habit is one I cherish because it reminds me just how much God teaches us in the ordinary moments if we’ll simply take the time to notice.

The Power of Reflection

As I looked back over this past week, I realized that every conversation we’ve had has really been about the same thing. We talked about learning to be still, listening when God speaks, viewing people through a different lens, recognizing how quickly life passes, trusting Him while we wait, and remembering the incredible story of a family whose lives changed with one unforgettable phone call. At first, those seemed like six different conversations, but this morning I realized they all point to one simple truth: our lives leave an impression on the people around us.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately.

The Impact of Ordinary Moments

Working in child welfare has taught me that we often underestimate the impact of ordinary moments. There have been families I’ve only known for a season, yet years later, I’ll run into someone who remembers a conversation we had or a small act of kindness that I had long forgotten. The same is true in our personal lives. We may never know how much a smile, an encouraging word, a patient response, or simply taking time to listen has meant to someone else.

It’s easy to think our lives are measured by the big moments:

  • 🎓 Graduations

  • 👰🏻‍♀️ Weddings

  • 🎂 Birthdays

  • 👩🏻‍💼 Promotions

  • 🏅 Major accomplishments

Those are certainly milestones worth celebrating. However, when I think about the people who have influenced my life, it isn’t usually one grand event that comes to mind. Instead, I remember consistency. I remember people who quietly lived their faith every day. I remember teachers who believed in me, church members who faithfully encouraged others, friends who showed up when life was difficult, and family members whose love was steady through every season.

Their influence wasn’t built in a single day. It was built one ordinary day at a time.

Choosing Faithfulness Over Perfection

As Christians, I don’t believe we’re called to draw attention to ourselves. In fact, the older I get, the less interested I am in being noticed. What I hope people remember isn’t something I accomplished or something I owned. I hope they remember how I treated them. I hope they felt respected when we talked, encouraged after we parted, and cared for even if we only crossed paths for a few minutes.

I think about that often as I go to work each day. There are children and families whose paths cross mine during some of the hardest seasons of their lives. I may not be able to solve every problem they face, and I certainly can’t remove every hardship, but I can choose how I treat them. I can choose patience over irritation. I can choose compassion over judgment. I can choose to listen before I speak. Those choices may seem small, but I’ve learned that small things often leave the deepest footprints.

Cherishing Family Moments

The same is true with my family. One day, the house will become quiet. Clayton will build his own life. Garrett will do the same. The baseball practices, late-night homework, and family dinners that fill my calendar today will eventually become cherished memories. When that day comes, I don’t think my boys will remember whether every room in the house was perfectly clean or whether supper was always elaborate. I hope they’ll remember that home was a place where they were loved, encouraged, and always knew they belonged.

That’s the kind of legacy I want to leave—not one built on perfection, but one built on faithfulness.

A Light That Points to Him

As I opened my Bible this morning, my thoughts settled on words that Jesus spoke during the Sermon on the Mount.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

I’ve heard that verse since I was a little girl, but this morning one phrase stood out to me more than ever before: ”…glorify your Father which is in heaven.” The light was never supposed to point people toward us. It was always meant to point them toward Him. That takes the pressure off, doesn’t it? I don’t have to be extraordinary. I simply need to be faithful.

  • Faithful in the way I love my family.

  • Faithful in the way I serve the people God places in my path.

  • Faithful in the way I run my business.

  • Faithful in the way I respond when life doesn’t go according to my plans.

If I do those things, then perhaps someone will see a glimpse of Christ—not because I preached a sermon, but because they experienced His love through an ordinary conversation, a kind word, or a quiet act of compassion.

Embracing New Opportunities

As another week comes to a close, that’s what I want to carry into the new one. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring. There will be new challenges at work, more baseball schedules to juggle, another week closer to taking Clayton back to college, and all the ordinary responsibilities that come with everyday life. But there will also be new opportunities to let the light of Christ shine in simple ways that may matter more than I ever realize.

Maybe that’s what this whole week has been about—not waiting for extraordinary moments, but recognizing that God does some of His greatest work through ordinary people who are willing to be faithful in ordinary days.

A Conversation Starter

I’d love to hear from you this morning. Who is someone whose quiet faith made a lasting difference in your life? What was it about them that you’ll never forget?

Thank you for spending a few quiet moments with me today. My hope is that when you leave here, you’ll notice God’s grace in the ordinary moments of your day.

Until tomorrow…

Keep your coffee warm, your Bible close, and your eyes open for the blessings God places in your path today.

I’ll meet you back here tomorrow—with another cup of coffee and another conversation.

❤️ Mandy
